Is it possible to set up a small bakery business from home in the uk (staffordshire) during a recession?

Question: Is it possible to set up a small bakery business from home in the uk (staffordshire) during a recession?

I am researching the idea and have found that many books refer to selling cupcakes/ traybakes to local delis. Truth of the matter is where we live there isn't any decent bakeries, delis etc and it doesn't really bother locals. Could I bake cakes (e.g. cupcakes) and sell via a website and deliver nationwide?

Look on a website called Enterprise Nation, great advice for those in the UK wishing to set up from home. Don't be put off because there are no decent delis or whatever in your area, there are plenty of other ways to get your goods to the public, like you say, delivery is an option, but there may be farmers markets or local fetes where you can showcase your goods and hand out cards. Once the locals taste a truly perfect cake they'll soon realise what they've been missing!

Yes but lots of things like licensing. health and safety and hygiene regulations have to be followed , Foods must be labelled with contents, ingredients and calorific values. percentage fat, sugar etc , OK for food manufacturers but how practical is it for a private company to follow all the rules , suggest you consult local council first before embarking on the venture

You will need to have studied the Food Hygiene Course and passed their exam for a start. You can get details at your local college.

Yes you can start with selling cakes for small parties birthdays or get together. Once you collect enough praise for your work you will get more orders. You can then create a website and promote it. Besides, you can even start a shop when you are confident enough.

Before you do anything your kitchen has to be inspected by your Environmental Health dept. You will need a seperate fridge for your business and have to fill out lots of paperwork. Contact them first and they wil give you all the legal advice. Cannot see how you can deliver nationwide as your costs would outweigh your profits.
